I’m reading a book at the moment called Atomic Habits, so many people recommended it and so far I’m really enjoying it!
In the book James talks about goals. How we create these big scary goals and believe that we won’t be happy or successful until we achieve them.
Sometimes our goal feels HUGE but actually it’s simple once you get to work on it.
A few years ago I set a goal that felt really big. That year I would be featured in the Huffington Post.
I set to it, thinking it would take months to get the perfect pitch, the perfect article, the perfect timing.
I imagined what it would feel like and how I’d finally have ‘made it’ as a writer. I have no idea where this came from but it was obviously important to me at the time.
And then, at the end of January, I had my first article published. Less than a month after I set the goal. It was all about using Borrow my Doggy and meeting Bertie the Chocolate Labrador, you can read it here if you’re interested!
Can you guess what happened? I was really proud, but it was abit of an anticlimax. I didn’t feel different, happier or even more like a writer. What I thought would take ages took 30 days to achieve.
The only thing that made me feel more like a writer was (surprise surprise) the writing.
I made the goal seem huge and lost the point of it, which was to focus on my writing.
Your goals can appear big and scary but when you break them into chunks they’re not always as difficult as they seem.
You might want to reach 10k followers on Instagram, so how will you get started today? You could take some new pictures or start replying to comments on other accounts.
Your goal might be to get to grips with Pinterest so you read a few articles and make a profile.
Maybe you want to launch a blog on your website, so you spend today brainstorming ideas and write your first post.
Goals are awesome and I love setting them, but we often focus on the feeling of achieving them, not enjoying everything you do to get there.
Start today and it’s probably closer than you think.
